Rampant flooding in the neighbourhood before the cyclone
The cyclone Nivar has not yet hit the Chennai coastline, but the neighbourhoods of Adyar, ECR, and OMR streets are already flooded with trees falling here and there. Though some neighbourhoods have reported clear roads, many areas suffered rampant flooding.
“Waterlogging is a perennial problem for the residents of Natco Colony, Kottivakkam. There are neither any sewer drainage systems provided nor any rainwater harvesting systems/stormwater drains for water to seep/flow. The mixing of sewage with rainwater is a health hazard. Water stagnation has propounded because of the rising road levels.
Our numerous representations have not elicited any positive results so far. If not too late will public authorities in charge of Ward 183, Zone 14 of Chennai Corporation, Kottivakkam, wake up from their slumber and take swift action?” wrote Srinivas from Kottivakkam. His house was inundated due to the flooding and he had to move it to a hotel at Thiruvanmiyur.
The mixing of sewage and rainwater was also reported at Perungudi, where Nithya Gunasekar said, “The open drainage got full and mixed with rainwater has entered our sump and also houses!”
At many places of waterlogging, the Corporation has been deploying suction machines to drain the water. Any reports of tree falls are also being addressed immediately.
Meanwhile, the Greater Chennai Corporation has released helpline numbers for the residents.
