Leading by example

Following a request from RMSM (Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar, Marundeeswarar Nagar, Sivakamipuram, Malaviya Avenue) People’s Security and Welfare Association, Regional Deputy Commissioner - South, Alby John Varghese, IAS, organised to send dry rations to the poorest of the poor in Marundeeswarar Nagar, Adyar.

While the government had initiated to provide free rations to the ration card holders, many do not hold them. Some of the most affected are women running the households and that includes elderly or abandoned women and the poor - as was in the case of the beneficiaries at Marundeeswarar Nagar.

As soon as the association came to know of the plight of the women, J. Krishnaveni, a tailor in Marundeeswarar Nagar helped the association gather the names of those without ration cards. The names were authenticated with their Aadhar card and the list was sent to the RDC on Apr.25.

The very next day, the RDC visited the locality to check on the logistics of distribution. However due to the total lockdown imposition from Apr.26, no distribution could be done. Thus, on May 1 Corporation arranged the distribution of rations to the affected women. BNY Mellon had sponsored the rations through the National Agro Foundation. 51 residents benefited from this initiative.

A true example of communities working with the government to make sure that no one starves in these testing times.
