Corporation launches Chatbot on social media platforms

The Corporation, on Apr.24, launched Chatbots for its social media handles - Facebook and Telegram. The interactive bot would provide the viewers with verified information from the Corporation at the touch of a button. The bot also aims to reduce the burden of the social media team of the Corporation in responding to public queries. Users can choose to communicate in Tamil or in English.


The Bot, as they are also called, was developed with the help of 2 brothers - Shaaban Karim and Shaamil Karim, residents of Sastri Nagar, Adyar. While Shaaban is a 3rd Year B.E. Manufacturing student of BITS Pilani at Hyderabad, Shaamil is a 12th standard student of Sishya School, Adyar.

The Bot would provide visitors information on various topics that include:

  1. Updates on COVID-19 cases

  2. What is Coronavirus and what are its symptoms?

  3. How does COVID-19 spread and how to reduce the risk of infection?

  4. Social media channels for updates

  5. Restrictions and Relaxations

  6. Hospitals and Testing Centers

  7. Important Helplines

  8. Emergency/Commodity travel pass application

  9. Actions taken by Greater Chennai Corporation


The Facebook Bot can be accessed from the Greater Chennai Corporation’s Facebook messenger. To access it on Telegram, select Greater Chennai Corporation with the tag Bot on it.The Corporation also intends to extend this facility to Twitter once the Bot is approved by it.


What is a Chatbot?

Chatbot is a software application used to conduct an on-line chat conversation with the user. The software uses extensive word-classification processes, Natural Language processors, and sophisticated Artificial Intelligence (AI), and general keywords scan to generate responses using common phrases obtained from an associated library or database.

Chatbots have become a common feature in many sites that involve interaction with customers. They are in-built messaging services provided by many companies to give a 24*7 support to the customers. Bots have known to reduce costs and improve customer experience because of their quick responses. Some of the sites using Bots include: TataSky, HDFC.
