A considerate Principal and friendly teacher

Kritika Venugopal, Besant Nagar

Madam Annamma Zachariah (seated third from left) with other teachers and my schoolmates at an informal get together a few years back.

Forty years ago, there was a quiet little girl, studying in LKG, who used to go home for lunch from school, as their house was in the same Quarters. One day, her mother met the Principal and appraised the daughter’s fear of the class-teacher Ms.Helen. The Principal then suggested Ms.Helen pick the child from her house. Ms.Helen’s friendly nature soon made school fun. This girl had accumulated many prizes in general proficiency and public speaking. She also topped the school in 10th std. The Principal was Mrs. Annamma Zachariah and that girl was… yes, you got it right - that was me!

Madam (as we called her) commanded great respect. Her way of teaching English kindled my love for the language. She also encouraged me in poetry when I showed her my first poem ‘The Butterfly’ while in class IV and helped me improve my communication and interpersonal skills as she cast me in various characters in the annual school plays. She will always remain as my unforgettable teacher and mentor.

My brother and I studied at the Reserve Bank Staff Quarters’ school at Besant Nagar from LKG till Class X. We had excellent teachers who gave us a lot of individual attention and helped nurture our knowledge and talents. I am very grateful to the school that laid a solid foundation for life.
